Margot Hulme is an illustrator based in the Hudson Valley. She recently graduated with a BFA in Printmaking from SUNY New Paltz, under the guidance of Aurora De Armendi Sobrino, Emilie Houssart, and Kate Collyer. Her work addresses the friction between care, violence, and safety.
Drawing upon children's picture books, folk art, and her own experiences, she translates her personal mythology into illustrations. Slow, cautious drawings become a place to process complex memories of the home. Careful mark-making serves as an embodied way of remembering and reflection; meticulous hatching as a way of self-soothing, scraping as a release, and frantic scratching as catharsis. Illustration enables her to transform home from a site of strain and crisis to a place of protection.
